Our Wise Woman Dr. Frauke Bender is one of our female pioneers bravely labeled the first of many things, such as the first female research assistant within her department at her University and the first woman to lead a department at a blue-chip German company, and much more.
Given her experience with paving the way for other women to follow within her wise and astonishing footprints, Frauke is passionate about empowering students and young professionals to work and thrive within culturally diverse communities.
However, her drive does not stop there. Frauke serves as a judge for Model United Nations, a volunteer for Young AmeriTowne, a team coach for the global nonprofit project Destination Imagination. She is also on the Wise Women Network Board of Directors and will be spreading her expertise through her podcast series Cultural Xchange.

As wise women, we believe that there are commonalities that make being a woman gloriously wonderful. What do you believe bridges women together?
I strongly believe that women are better together! There are many ways women can empower each other. Be a role model, offer support, celebrate each other’s wins, and look for opportunities to promote other women. For decades, women have been calling for equality in life. And now, we are at a pivotal moment for women’s rights. We are telling our stories and provoking necessary conversations. It is time for equality and opportunity, respect, and equal representation.
You, our beloved wise woman, overcame challenges. Your wisdom brings each of us one step closer to our dreams. Tell us, your fellow daughters and sisters of an experience where you had to excel despite the odds and you overcame. Did it create a navigational pivot in your life?
Looking back, most of the situations I had to overcome were probably job-related. I was the first female research assistant at my University, the only woman leading a department at a blue-chip German company. There were many “first moments” in my career. I remember going to my first interview. I wore glasses instead of my contacts and a simple outfit because I feared being judged by my appearance and not for my knowledge and skills. I always felt that I had to work twice as hard as my male colleagues. I also tried to blend in by wearing dark suits and adapting to the behavior of my male colleagues. It took me a while to realize that I will only be happy and successful in what I am doing when being my authentic self.
As women, we have so much to bring to the table and enrich our workplaces and societies. So why don’t we dare to be true to ourselves? Why don’t we know our worth in this world?
Take us back to your youth. What do you wish that you would have sought after back then? Maybe there was something that you wish would have been given to you or created for you? Otherwise, if you believe you had everything that you needed, please tell us what you are grateful for having.
Regardless of the obstacle, ever since I can remember, I have been pursuing my goals in life and refusing to give up until I reached them.
Today you may call it being resilient or perseverant. Back then, people just called me stubborn. I guess my mom had a huge impact on my attitude as she was a wonderful role model in not giving up. After each failure or disappointment, she told me to move on and not lose sight of my goals. I am grateful for all the wonderful experiences in my youth that shaped my life and made me the person I am today. A motto of my life might be “thriving through challenges.” Looking back, one crucial thing I might have wished for would have been to connect with other women to seek wisdom from and receive empowerment by joined forces.
How do you use social media to seek or share wisdom?
I am not actively searching the internet to seek wisdom. However, I have recently signed up for a couple of newsletters regarding guidance on healthy lifestyles. I am so excited that the Wise Women Network will take the foundation and platform of seeking and sharing wisdom going forward!
Ring… ring. Your boss or mentor is calling and suddenly available for lunch. You must go and you have only three minutes to prepare yourself. What will you do? What is your emergency "go-to" outfit and\or makeup routine?
I do not have a “go-to” outfit, probably anything that makes me feel good and powerful that day. I will for sure apply some blush on my face to look fresh and energized and spray my favorite perfume on my skin. That is probably all it needs for me.
When 'life was normal', how did you maintain balance in your life (i.e. hours at the gym, prayer, apps, meditation)? Now speed up time and add a mask to your daily outfit. How do you establish balance?
I used to be a competitive swimmer during my childhood and youth. I cannot imagine a life without any physical activity. It also taught me to organize my daily schedule efficiently and to manage my time wisely. Getting older, I learned to enrich my strength and endurance training with yoga and pilates. For me, a perfect balance in life consists of physical activities as well as time for myself resting and recharging.
Before the pandemic, I went to the gym a few times a week and cherished my favorite hot yoga classes. During the pandemic, I shifted my activities to the outdoors and have been enjoying my spare time skiing and hiking in beautiful Colorado.
We believe that to become wise, we must continue to learn and grow throughout our lives. In what area of your life are you directing more focus on now? What sparked this focus?
Learning is a lifelong process. I believe in a growth mindset for personal development. I am still trying to become a better version of myself.
Though it is a daily challenge, I promised myself not to quit. I am still learning to do my own thing without being influenced by the opinion or comments of other people. I love the idea of peace and harmony, so it is quite challenging for me to go on my path, even if that implies that people might disagree with me.
Hide me, please! What is your best short notice 'escape' or 'mom hack'?
My best escape is to get outside for a walk. It always helps me to get grounded, calm, or energized, whatever is needed.
Let's be honest, we've all had extra time to think during the pandemic. Have you thought about your legacy and what you would like to leave behind? Or, what dream do you want to achieve next?
My biggest dream is to travel the world and get to know as many beautiful people, cultures, and places as possible. I am committed to helping people, especially our youth, to get connected and support them by building bridges between different cultures to unite people with diverse backgrounds.
Some mountains seem impossible to climb. Many women have juggled climbing the complex mountain of gender bias, while needing to gracefully overcome it in the midst of pain and difficulty. Your sisters want to learn from how you were able to navigate this mountain.
Gender bias is a vast topic.
Despite some advances, the state of women’s rights remains dire as inequality and discrimination are the norm, everywhere in the world. Women still face many barriers and male-dominated power structures that underpin our economies, political systems, and corporations. The 21st century must be a century of women’s equality. “Only through the equal participation of women can we benefit from the intelligence, experience, and insights of all of humanity. Women’s equal participation is vital to stability, helps prevent conflict, and promotes sustainable, inclusive development. Gender equality is the prerequisite for a better world.” – UN Secretary-General António Guterres

I am grateful for all the wonderful, wise women in my life. My home team back in Germany, all the wise women I met during stays in the US and my family. Just to mention one name, my friend Angela, the leader of our tribe of wise women!

Yeasss! I love to do that. It instantly lifts me up. The music I pick depends on my mood. Aretha Franklin’s “Respect” is a powerhouse.

Definitely my mom! She is still my role model regarding her inner strength, power, and courage to fearlessly cope with all the challenges and obstacles life sets us. She taught me from the very beginning to pursue my own path in life and gave me the wings to fly. There is not a single day that I do not think of her and miss her.

My favorite place is anyplace by the ocean. I am sure there are a million reasons to love the ocean. Listening to the crushing waves and watching the far away horizon, gives me a sense of peace and makes me humble because I realize that we are all a part of something bigger.
To retain youth, I wisely...
Drink a lot of fresh (green) juices, use tons of facial oils plus sheet masks, and get outside with my family as much as possible. Above all, my teenage kids keep me healthy and active on a physical and mental level.
