Susan is a top leading bass player in our country, performing and recording musical masterpieces nationally and internationally, while educating other musicians to perform at their absolute best. This sounds like a fulfilling, joyful, and purpose-driven journey, doesn’t it? This, my wise sisters, is just a tiny fraction of our wise woman Susan Cahill’s life.
Susan is here to share her profoundly rooted wealth of wisdom and purpose. Her journey consists of experiences with the Colorado Symphony, the Lamont School of Music at the University of Denver, Co-Director of MAS Eclectic, and Founding member of Grande Orquesta Navarre.
Nuggets of her wisdom can be found throughout the Wise Women Network as she is a Founding Member and sits on the Board of Directors.
Susan is also one of our Wise Coaches in The Wise Boutique.
HERstory Q&A

As wise women, we believe that there are commonalities that make being a woman gloriously wonderful. What do you believe bridges women together?
You, our beloved wise woman, overcame challenges. Your wisdom brings each of us one step closer to our dreams. Tell us, your fellow daughters and sisters of an experience where you had to excel despite the odds and you overcame. Did it create a navigational pivot in your life?
I had to work hard to overcome the challenge of succeeding in a primarily male-dominated field. My instrument, the double bass, is the largest instrument in the string family and most of the people who have and are playing it are men. Women are too often seen as not strong enough or not loud enough bass players to be successful, especially in an orchestra. We still face inherent biases from not just male bass players but other orchestral players and conductors, both male and female. This didn’t so much create a navigation point as it became a constant in my life. Fortunately, many of us female bass players have banded together to create meaningful communities that are very supportive.
Take us back to your youth. What do you wish that you would have sought after back then? Maybe there was something that you wish would have been given to you or created for you? Otherwise, if you believe you had everything that you needed, please tell us what you are grateful for having.
I wish I had and had been given more confidence as a young girl to pursue my dreams. I did it anyway, but it would have helped me feel more confident about it, especially as a young musician. I was the youngest of three in a household that was experiencing many obstacles to a healthy childhood. They are not unusual. Many people have these challenges, but it is clear to me now that it would have been better if the family could have functioned better. That being said, I am still grateful for the many advantages that I did have, especially my parents, who treasured music so much.
How do you use social media to seek or share wisdom?
I do try to make sure that my social media contact is positive. I avoid gripe sessions or calling people out. To me, it does not seem good for my mental health. If I want to have a complaining session, I call a close friend! I think that social media can be a great place to share what I call “bright Spots,” the things in our lives that are going well. I will share the occasional struggle, but I will usually try to find a humorous aspect about it to share.
Ring… ring. Your boss or mentor is calling and suddenly available for lunch. You must go and you have only three minutes to prepare yourself. What will you do? What is your emergency "go-to" outfit and\or makeup routine?
In my line of work, there are rarely unscheduled emergencies. Because there are so many moving parts to the orchestra, many things are scheduled way in advance. That being said, I live by a simple work attire rule ” if you are not dressed up enough to have to change when you get home from work, you are not dressed up enough.”
When 'life was normal', how did you maintain balance in your life (i.e. hours at the gym, prayer, apps, meditation)? Now speed up time and add a mask to your daily outfit. How do you establish balance?
Gym? Yes. Prayer and meditation are a must. Making sure I carved enough family and friend time is also of huge importance!
We believe that to become wise, we must continue to learn and grow throughout our lives. In what area of your life are you directing more focus on now? What sparked this focus?
I am directing more focus to my composing efforts. To me, exploring composition is a wisdom builder in that you have to search within yourself to write meaningfully. I am also doing a lot more mentoring of young women bass players.
Hide me, please! What is your best short notice 'escape' or 'mom hack'?
Being a mom of twins, I had to come up with fast relaxation hacks super early. I used to joke that a nap for a twin mom was resting her face in her hands and rubbing her face for 5 seconds. Now that my kids are older, I can take real ‘naps’ (sometimes those naps are really just me closing my bedroom door and reading, but I find if I call them ‘naps’, then the family doesn’t bother me #protip)
Let's be honest, we've all had extra time to think during the pandemic. Have you thought about your legacy and what you would like to leave behind? Or, what dream do you want to achieve next?
I tend not to think in these terms too often, probably because I am too busy doing the job I was destined to do. I figure that will have to take care of my legacy for me!
Some mountains seem impossible to climb. Many women have juggled climbing the complex mountain of gender bias, while needing to gracefully overcome it in the midst of pain and difficulty. Your sisters want to learn from how you were able to navigate this mountain.
In the early days of my career I am quite certain that I did not navigate the mountain of gender bias very gracefully. In fact, one of the reasons I’m passionate about helping other women is because I learned through hard won experience what types of things can go wrong in dealing with bias struggles. I don’t want to be an apologist; certainly others in society bear the responsibility for us even having to climb the mountain in the first place. But the fact remains that there are ways to get what you want and need, and there are ways to sabotage those efforts. I’m interested in finding whatever ‘hack’ works for myself and my fellow women to succeed.
Let me give a good example. When I travel by air for work I put my instrument in a very large flight case. Think a carbon fiber case the size of a mummy sarcophagus that you might see in a museum. The add about a foot in each dimension and make sure it weights at least 100 pounds. Now, these things have wheels, so theoretically I can lug it through the airport, and I have. In my early days, if a man came up to me and offered to help getting it to the ticket counter, I might have been offended and refused the offer curtly. After one too many strained shoulders I finally realized that my obstinance was only hurting me, literally. The average male that offers to help is usually almost a foot taller and has 100 pounds on me. Why not accept the help? What am I trying to prove, and to whom? My job is to show up at my place of work with equipment that works and that includes my shoulders! If I don’t do that, I am doing a disservice to the people who expect me to perform at my top ability. That is not responsible.
Responsibility, or ‘The ability to respond’ means different things in every situation. If I use a blanket approach, say, ‘All men are out to show me what a little lady I am’ then I deprive myself of whatever true knowledge might be gained from them and from myself. I try not ascribe story lines to anybody until I have done some investigation as to their motives. I find this is the best way to both get what I want and need while keeping my side of the street clean. Most of us are trying as hard as we can, even if we ourselves are sometimes acting from our own inherent biases.
